Biostrategie gegen Feuerbrand Organic Eprints

Cocoa agroforestry systems vs. monocultures under conventional and organic management - results from tropical Bolivia Organic Eprints
Andres, Christian; Milz, Joachim; Seidel, Renate; Trujillo, German; Alcon, Freddy; Weibel, Franco; Schneider, Monika.
Cocoa is one of the most important export commodities for many developing countries and provides income for millions of smallholders. The expansion of cocoa production has resulted in habitat destruction, biodiversity loss, and soil degradation. The prevalent cocoa production systems worldwide are conventional monoculture full sun systems. Agroforestry systems are argued to be a viable strategy for sustainable cocoa production. However, data-based information on advantages and limitations of different cocoa production systems is limited. Pairwise comparisons on the long-term performance of cocoa monocultures and agroforestry systems under conventional and organic management are inexistent. FiBL is pioneering to fill this knowledge gap with a unique...

Cocoa in Full-sun Monocultures vs. Shaded Agroforestry Systems under Conventional and Organic Management in Bolivia Organic Eprints
Schneider, Monika; Andres, Christian; Trujillo, German; Alcon, Freddy; Amurrio, Patricia; Seidel, Renate; Weibel, Franco; Milz, Joachim.
Cocoa is a crucial export commodity for many developing countries and provides income for millions of smallholders. However, cocoa cultivation has resulted in habitat destruction, biodiversity loss and soil degradation. While much of the world’s cocoa is produced in arguably unsustainable full-sun monoculture systems, shaded agroforestry systems may be an alternative for sustainable cocoa production. However, data-based information on advantages and limitations of different cocoa production systems are limited and pairwise comparisons on the long-term performance of cocoa monocultures and agroforestry systems under conventional and organic management are literally inexistent. The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) is pioneering to fill this...

Consumer Reaction to the «Flavour Group Concept» to introduce Scab Resistant Apple Varieties into the Market. «Variety-Teams» as a Further Development of the Concept Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco; Leder, Alfred.
A tool to ease the market introduction of scab resistant apple varieties in supermarkets, is the socalled «Flavour Group Concept (FGC; Weibel and Grab, 2000) that has been developed by FiBL and «Coop» (second biggest supermarket retailer of Switzerland) already in 1995. The FGC is providing to the buyers additional information on the specific flavour direction of that "unknown" apple cultivar in front of them (mild to sweet; spicy-tart; predominantly tart). In 2002 a consumer behaviour study was undertaken by «IHA/GfK-Switzerland» Institute to evaluate the consumer response to the FGC. The results reveal that 36 % of the persons interviewed at the point of sale considered additional information on the flavour direction of the apple cultivars as...

Culturable Fungi of Stored ‘Golden Delicious’ Apple Fruits: A One-Season Comparison Study of Organic and Integrated Production Systems in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Granado, José; Thürig, Barbara; Kieffer, Edith; Petrini, Liliane; Fliessbach, Andreas; Tamm, Lucius; Weibel, Franco; Wyss, Gabriela S..
The effects of organic and integrated production systems on the culturable fungal microflora of stored apple fruits from five matched pairs of certified organic and integrated ‘Golden Delicious’ farms were studied at five representative production sites in Switzerland. Isolated fungi were identified morphologically. Colonization frequency (percentage of apples colonized), abundance (colony numbers), and diversity (taxon richness) were assessed for each orchard. The standard quality of the stored fruits was comparable for both organic and integrated apples and complied with national food hygiene standards. Yeasts (six taxa) and the yeast-like fungus Aureobasidium pullulans were the dominant epiphytes, filamentous fungi (21 taxa) the dominant endophytes. The...

Dem Un- ist ein Habichtskraut gewachsen Organic Eprints
Tschabold, Jean-Luc; Weibel, Franco; Häseli, Andreas; Suter, Francisco; Delabays, Nicola.

Development of a Management Tool to Indicate the Environmental Impact of Organic Viticulture Organic Eprints
Fragoulis, Georgios; Trevisan, Marco; di Guardo, Andrea; Scorce, Andrea; van der Meer, Markus; Weibel, Franco; Capri, Ettore.
Organic viticulture is an important part of the European Union organic farming sector, and, according to the most recent surveys, 1.5% of European Union wine originates from organic farms, with an upward trend. This paper describes an environmental impact of an organic viticulture indicator (EIOVI) that can be reliably used in the management of organic vineyards. The EIOVI can be used as a decision support system for farmers and other property managers by evaluating the potential ecological impact of their choices, thus optimizing management options. The tool allows the simulation of vineyard management based on six agricultural and ecological modules. The EIOVI is a fuzzy expert system that calculates the relationship between the modules on the basis of a...

Ecological Apple Production: a Comparison of Organic and Integrated Apple-growing Organic Eprints
Bertschinger, Lukas; Mouron, Patrik; Dolega, Ewa; Höhn, Heinrich; Holliger, Eduard; Husistein, Alfred; Schmid, Andi; Siegfried, Werner; Widmer, Albert; Zürcher, Matthias; Weibel, Franco.
In 1995, an experiment was planted at Wädenswil for comparing organic and integrated apple production. The overall goal of this experiment was to develop a data set which allows for an objective overall comparison of the two production concepts. Horticultural, ecological and economical traits were looked at. In practical terms, the study should particularly clarify how suitable the two systems are for producing marketable fresh fruit under Swiss conditions. The approach of an on-station comparison with a split-plot design with 3 replicate blocks and the factors “production system” (1st factor) and “variety” (2nd factor) was chosen. Ninety-four percent of Swiss apple acreage is managed according to integrated production, and 5% according to organic...

Economics Evaluation of Apple Production Systems Organic Eprints
Bravin, Esther; Mencarelli Hofmann, Daniel; Kockerols, Katharina; Weibel, Franco.
With economic indicators from the full cost account and the cash flow statement it is possible to identify the return-risk profile for the organic and the integrated apple production in Switzerland. The full cost account and the cash-flow time line are composed with the managerial-economical software-tool Arbokost. Due to higher (more than 100%) prices in the organic production, growing organic satisfies more return-oriented producers than growing certified integrated. However, the higher return in the organic production is bound to a higher risk. With the certified integrated production (IFP), return and risk are lower. ‘Arbokost’ is an economic farm management software tool for fruit growers. Per orchard it reflects a full cost account, the cash flows...

Effect of cultural methods on leaf spot (Mycosphaerella fragariae) and gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) damage in strawberries Organic Eprints
Schmid, Andi; Daniel, Claudia; Weibel, Franco.
Damage of leaf spot, caused by Mycosphaerella fragariae and gray mold also called Botrytis fruit rot, caused by Botrytis cinerea, average fruit weight and yield were evaluated with regard to cultural methods over two years. Leaf spot damage decreased significantly by around 90 % due to leaf sanitation (removal of dead and leaf spot infected leaves in early spring) and by 50 % due to plantation in a one-row-system instead of a two-row-system. When all leaves including the healthy green ones were removed in early spring average fruit weight decreased significantly by 10 %. Fruit sanitation - the third treatment – did not influence any of the measured parameters. Neither leaf sanitation nor fruit sanitation (removal of damaged fruits during harvest) reduced...

Effect of cultural methods on leaf spot (Mycosphaerella fragariae Tul.) incidence in strawberries Organic Eprints
Schmid, Andi; Daniel, Claudia; Weibel, Franco.
Introduction: Leaf spot caused by Mycosphaerella fragariae Tul. is one of the most common diseases of strawberry. The control of leaf spot mostly relies on the application of protective fungicides (MAAS 1998). In organic agriculture the use of copper products is effective (VUKOVITS 1980) but this has a negative influence on soil fertility.(BERGMANN 1993).Therefore its use in strawberry crops should also be reduced.

Efficient Multi-location Testing of Scab Resistant Cultivars for Organic Apple Production in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco; Schmid, Andi; Häseli, Andreas.
The market and production of organic apples is growing worldwide. Most of the production occurs on freshly converted orchards with cultivars very sensitive to apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) that in humid conditions need an intensive plant protection program. For the future development of organic fruit growing towards a credibly sustainable production it is necessary to replace these cultivars with scab resistant or tolerant cultivars. Cultivar testing under organic growing conditions is therefore an important task. We describe our testing concept that consists of precision trials where cultivars are tested with an without aphid control and with and without crop load regulation. In parallel, we carry out on-farm trials with the most promising cultivars on...

Ekologické ovocnářství na vyšších kmenných tvarech Organic Eprints
Häseli, Andreas; Weibel, Franco; Brunner, Hans; Müller, Werner; Kranzler, Andreas; Spornberger, Andreas; Schramayr, Georg; Waltl, Karl.
Výsadby ovocných dřevin na vyšších kmenných tvarech, kam patří vysokokmeny, případně i polokmeny, mají zpravidla podobu extenzivních sadů, alejí, stromořadí, skupinových výsadeb, ale i solitérů. Tyto výsadby obohacují krajinu a významně podporují biologickou rozmanitost.

Currently the market demand for Swiss organic sweet cherries is far above the actual production. However, organic sweet cherry production is under high pressure to change the cultivation system and cultivars in order to meet the new requirements of the market for a regular supply of faultless and big-sized fruit. Additionally there is a necessity to for a more economical management. In this study we assessed the agronomic and economic result of a modern organic sweet cherry orchard over the first 4 cropping years. The orchard is equipped with modern cultivars like Kordia, Regina etc. and a plastic cover to prevent rain-due cracking and Monilia disease. Sideward’s an insect net is fitted to exclude cherry fly infestation. The results prove that...
